Bethany felt compelled to raise her right hand in oath. “I promise. I'll go as soon as we hang up. The work can wait until I return.”

Jonathan's “okay" signaled his reluctant acceptance before ending the call.

Bethany set aside her phone, but her gaze remained fixed on the monitor.
