Chapter: 248
“Does Bethany have something over our president?"
"No way. Mr. Bates is reserved, seemingly indifferent to women, and deeply serious about his work. How could anyone have leverage over him? But I have seen Bethany. She really is quite beautiful."
"Do you think there's a shortage of beautiful women around Mr. Bates?"
"Good point."
As long as Jonathan wanted, he could have any woman he desired.
The two women were about to say something more when they saw Maddie staring intently at them.
It was obvious she had heard their conversation.
"Does Bates Group pay you to gossip?" Maddie asked.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Hinchcliffe." The two women stood up and apologized.
“Save the apology for the head of your department, who I'll be reporting you to," Maddie said.
She then turned around and walked to the CEO's office.
She had heard from Brody that Jonathan was in his office. She knocked when she got to the door.
A voice answered, and Maddie opened the door and went in.
Jonathan briefly looked up from the pile of documents on his table at her before returning his attention to the documents.
His attitude towards her seemed to be completely different from when she had just come back. Although he had not been particularly overjoyed to see her then, he had at least accorded her the courtesy one accorded a colleague.
But because of Bethany, everything had changed.
Maddie quickly masked her emotions and walked towards Jonathan's desk, handing him the envelope in her hand.
"I know you believe that I framed Bethany and that nothing I say will change your mind, so I won't waste my time. Here's my resignation as the chief lawyer," she said.
Jonathan finally looked up at her and said, “I only believe in the truth."
“Jonathan, don't you understand? I don't care about what other people say about me. I only care about your opinion of me. Your apparent partiality towards Bethany in this case is what gives me concern,"
Maddie said as she stared at Jonathan.
Jonathan had done a lot for Bethany. He had treated her with great care.
However, what Maddie had done for him was no less. Bates Group had been in troubles before. Maddie had spent nights without sleep searching for solutions. This had proved to everyone in the industry that Bates Group's lawyer was a tough nut to crack and that the legal department of Bates Group was indeed a reputable one.
Maddie had thought that all she had done would have at least caused Jonathan to take a neutral stance on the issue between her and Bethany.
