Chapter: 302
Bethany was somewhat attractive, but the world was full of beautiful women.
“That's why I suggested that you go abroad." John didn't argue with Godfrey.
"Do you think you can be with Bethany once we're gone? Your mother is determined, and nothing will sway her. Even if I prefer to stay out of it, I must support her because of her condition. Jonathan, I don't want to push you, but you need to listen to me on this. Be with Maddie. It would make your mother happy and help her recover."
"Dad," Jonathan suddenly interrupted, locking eyes with Godfrey, “what if I asked you to divorce Mom and marry someone else? Would you do it."
Godfrey was stunned. "How can you compare the two? We've been married for years; we have a son!"
"There's no difference." Jonathan lowered his eyes. "You love Mom and cherish her, and I love Bethany the same way. There's no difference between us."
He had believed there would be a resolution, but now things seemed bleak.
Seeing Jonathan's despondent expression, Godfrey seemed to reconsider his stance. Raising an eyebrow, he asked tentatively, “Did Bethany divorce you?"
Though the question lingered unanswered, Jonathan's silence conveyed volumes.
Godfrey pursed his lips, opting to say nothing more.
In this moment, he truly believed Bethany wasn't with his son for money. But what good did it do? Francine didn't accept Bethany as her daughter-in-law, rendering everything futile.
Bethany chose a serene gravesite for her mother, nestled in a quiet corner.
She wished for her mother's eternal rest to be unperturbed by anyone.
After Bethany settled affairs at the hospital, Marie's body lay at the funeral home, awaiting burial.
Aimee had taken a leave to be there, and upon seeing Bethany's expressionless face, her heart ached so deeply that she found it difficult to breathe normally. “Bethany, have you eaten anything? I'll ask my brother to bring something over; you should eat something.”
Bethany turned her numb face, forcing a comforting smile. “I'm alright. Thank you for being here with me."
“Come on! Why say such things?" Holding Bethany's hand, Aimee feared the person before her might vanish into thin air at any moment.
In just a few hours, Bethany had become so worn out as if a gust of wind could knock her down.
"Jonathan's people will approach you soon, and he might come to ask you things personally; don't say anything."
Bethany knew Jonathan. He wouldn't give up so easily.
Someone who quietly loved her for years would surely seek answers before letting go.
“Bethany, I don't understand. Why not continue to stay by his side? Why insist on breaking free from him?" Aimee believed staying by Jonathan's side was the safest, most straightforward path.
Whether it was considering if the Bates family would harm Bethany again or if she wanted to investigate her mother's true cause of death, using Jonathan was the simplest route. Why avoid it?
Moreover, Bethany now carries Jonathan's child in her womb; perhaps the Bates family might be willing to accept it.
