Chapter: 301
It was the first time Jonathan had spoken such words in his career.
“But the situation is complex; you really should come in person. Hmm. And there's something I've discovered concerning Bethany."
“I'm on my way back now."
Jonathan's car headed straight for Bates Group. Just moments after Brody's call, Godfrey's name flashed on Jonathan's phone.
“Where are you?" Godfrey asked.
"I'm on my way to the office."
"Get to the hospital first! Your mother's back in the ICU!"
Jonathan frowned, his foot slamming on the brake. “Isn't this enough? My mother's fine, right?"
He had his suspicions.
During his previous hospital visit, Godfrey displayed no signs of worry. It seemed Godfrey had been trying to keep him at the hospital.
Having witnessed his father under genuine distress when his mother's life was at risk, Jonathan knew when Godfrey was feigning urgency.
Godfrey exhaled deeply. "It's real this time. I can video chat to prove it."
Jonathan was silent, processing.
The sincerity in Godfrey's voice suggested the truth of the matter.
After a pause, Jonathan agreed and ended the call.
Upon reaching the hospital, he found Godfrey pacing anxiously outside the emergency room.
As Jonathan approached, Godfrey rushed over. “It was serious! She suddenly couldn't breathe and passed out!"
Throughout his life, Godfrey had remained composed in numerous crises, but the recurring severe illness of his wife unraveled him.
In the business community, Godfrey and Francine were seen as a perfect couple, which made Jonathan believe he, too, would find his ideal partner and share a blissful life together.
"What happened this time?"
Jonathan asked.
Godfrey fell into silence. He couldn't admit that it was because he had ignored Francine's advice and not done everything possible to keep Jonathan away from Bethany, could he?
"You could go abroad. They have better medical technology," Jonathan suggested. "She's always emotionally unstable at home."
“Isn't that all because of you? If you just agreed to be with Maddie, everything would be fine. I even compromised by asking you to pretend to be a couple with Maddie for a while, and then I'd leave you and Bethany alone. But you still refused." Godfrey couldn't grasp Jonathan's feelings for Bethany, or why he couldn't even feign interest in Maddie.
