Chapter: 306
For him, it had always been a one-sided affair.

“Alas... Aimee sighed, offering a somber observation. “She's just scared of being a burden. She's endured so much."

Meanwhile, Bethany sat in the car, caught between waking and sleeping.

She felt aimless and hopeless. The things she had clung to had fallen apart. She was unsure what would drive her if she uncovered the truth and exposed everything.

Half-awake, Bethany faintly heard her phone ringing.

She lifted her heavy arm and saw several missed calls from Jonathan.

Bethany had no desire to hear his voice. It would only bring back memories of the Bates family and their cruel words and looks that had driven her mother, Marie, to her untimely death.

Marie had been planning a future for her beloved daughter, pushing her towards Jayson. There had been no indication she wanted to end her life.

As Bethany looked at her mother's body, she wished she was the one dead.

If she had never met Jonathan and married him, perhaps these tragic events would have never unfolded, and her mother might still be alive.

She couldn't fault Jonathan because he wasn't to blame. The resentment she felt was directed solely at herself.

A notification sound interrupted her introspection.

This time, it was not a call but a message.

Bethany glanced down-it was from Jonathan.

“Come back to East Shade Bay. I'm waiting for you. Even if it's for the divorce, we need to sign the agreement in person."

She ran her thumb over the phone screen repeatedly, yet ultimately, she didn't respond.

A short while later, Jayson and Aimee entered the car. Observing her pale, drawn face, Jayson offered, “Let's go to Aimee's for a bit so you can rest. Sleeping in the car isn't doing you any good. You need to be rested to handle what's coming."

“Yes! Stay at my place. I'll make sure you're not disturbed while you rest," Aimee added.

Bethany merely shook her head. When she finally spoke, her voice was raspy. “Take me back to East Shade Bay."

“Why would you want to go back there?" Aimee, remembering her cousin's words and suspecting Bethany might be planning to die with Jonathan, hurriedly interjected. "My place is just around the corner. I can look after you. Don't go back to that damn place."

"Jonathan has agreed to the divorce. I need to go back and sign the agreement," Bethany explained.

"Jonathan agreed to divorce?"

Surprise widened Aimee's eyes.

She had assumed Jonathan wouldn't consent so easily.
