Chapter: 311
"Who is this?" she asked.
"Nikolas," he replied.
Gripping her phone tightly, Bethany demanded, “Is something wrong with Jonathan?"
"Yes, he drank too much and now he's in the hospital with gastrorrhagia."
Bethany stood up almost subconsciously, heading towards the door.
Then, in a sudden realization, she paused.
Wasn't Nikolas supposed to be Maddie's friend? Why was he calling her now?
As if attuned to her uncertainties, Nikolas said with a tinge of helplessness, "I understand that Maddie isn't the one Jonathan truly loves."
"I'm not either," Bethany said, stopping in her tracks. "If I go now, it'll only give Jonathan hope, making our divorce impossible. And Maddie won't get what she wants."
"Jonathan is in a coma right now. The doctors don't know when he'll wake up. Whether you go or not is up to you," Nikolas said. "By the way, Maddie doesn't know about this, nor do Jonathan's parents. He came straight to me."
Bethany's already pale lips trembled as an expression of worry came upon her face. "Which hospital?"
She suspected that Nikolas wanted to avoid Jonathan's parents, as he had taken Jonathan to the hospital where Marie had stayed instead of the one Francine was in.
Coincidentally, the hospital was where she had her pregnancy check-up.
She moved cautiously when she got to the hospital, nervous that she might encounter the nurse and doctor who had examined her.
Luckily, it was the weekend, so there weren't many people walking around.
Bethany headed to the room Nikolas had told her. Soon, she was at the door.
Nikolas, who was outside at the door smoking, spotted her. He took one last drag of his cigarette, then threw it down and stamped it out. "He's inside," he said.
"Is he still unconscious?"
"Yes," Nikolas said, nodding. He stared intently at her pale face.
“Why did you suddenly decide to leave Jonathan? Did something happen?"
Nikolas, who was an outsider, wasn't aware of Jonathan's parents and Maddie's plans. To him, everything seemed to have happened so suddenly.
Hadn't Bethany and Jonathan just been madly in love?
"Nothing happened. It just didn't feel right anymore. We were too different."
"That explanation will only satisfy a love-struck fool like Jonathan,"
