Chapter: 313
"Just curious. But if you don't want to share, I can ask the doctor."

“Because I was told there's a chance I might not conceive; she recommended discussing it with my husband. Is that explanation enough?"

Bethany responded, her annoyance evident.

Nikolas looked embarrassed and apologetic. "Ah, my apologies for intruding. Just one more thing, did this play a role in your decision to divorce Jonathan?"

“It's not solely about that. Jonathan's family disapproves of me and has been trying to split us up. Aren't you rooting for Jonathan and Maddie too? After careful consideration, I've realized going against the Bates family brings me no benefit, and Jayson treats me well without all these complications, so I choose him."

Sensing Nikolas' skepticism, Bethany tried to make her explanation more convincing.

To her surprise, her words seemed to infuriate Nikolas. "You're leaving Jonathan over something like that?"

"Yes," Bethany replied tersely.

“Then he's completely blind! He's been so devoted to you, pouring his heart out, wanting nothing but to cherish you, and you're just casually choosing this Jayson over him?"

Nikolas was furious, something Bethany hadn't anticipated.

Bethany looked at him in disbelief, her brow furrowing. “Aren't you hoping for Jonathan to end up with Maddie? Me stepping aside should be good news for you."

Nikolas was taken aback for a moment, then sighed. “That doesn't mean I won't call you out! I'll make sure to tell Jonathan everything you said, word for word, so he can see your true colors. Maddie is better for him!"

Bethany pursed her dry lips, causing them to crack and slightly bleed.

“Can I go in now, or should I leave?" she asked.

Observing Nikolas smoking by the door, she realized Jonathan's condition wasn't too dire. Whether she visited him or not didn't seem to matter much anymore.

"You are truly cold-blooded Nikolas scoffed, pushing the door open."

"It's not about what I want; it's Jonathan who wants to see you! If it were up to me, I'd send you straight to jail, or worse, to hell!"

"Huh."

Did Bethany still care about jail or hell?

It was something Nikolas couldn't comprehend.

Inside the room, Jonathan lay silently.

If not for his pallor, he could have been mistaken for sleeping.

His left hand was connected to an IV, and the monitoring equipment on his right beeped steadily.

Bethany approached cautiously, longing to touch his skin and feel his pulse one last time. But her fingers froze in mid-air, unable to reach out.
