Chapter: 38
She extended her hand to hail a taxi, but unexpectedly, it wasn't a taxi that pulled up beside her-it was Jonathan's car.

“Get in.”

The window rolled down, revealing Jonathan's handsome side profile.

“Sorry, but I don't have the time." Bethany waved her hand hurriedly.

“I have to visit my mother at the hospital today!"

Seeing her frantic expression, Jonathan sighed helplessly, reached over, and opened the door to the passenger seat. "I'll take you there."

Bethany fell into stunned silence and made no move to get in the car.

"If you don't get in the car now, the others will notice us."

This snapped Bethany out of her reverie. Fearful that rumors about her would spread throughout the company, she hopped in the car and quickly shut the door behind her.

Today, Jonathan was driving, and his assistant wasn't present. With just the two of them in the car, Bethany felt a bit uneasy.

Noticing the big bouquet of flowers and intricately wrapped gift on the back seat, she cleared her throat and asked awkwardly, “Mr. Bates, are you going on a date?"

“With whom?" was his puzzled response.

Bethany was once again rendered speechless. Weren't the flowers and gift for Maddie?

“and didn't I tell you not to call me Mr. Bates in private?"

Bethany shrank back, hiding her complex emotions. “But addressing you that way shows respect!"

"Just call me Jonathan," he reminded her, his expression softening.

Just as Bethany opened her mouth to protest, it suddenly struck her that Maddie also called him Jonathan.

No wonder he wanted her to use his first name.

Did he love Maddie so deeply that, even knowing she, Bethany, was just a substitute, he still treated her with such kindness?

For some reason, Bethany didn't feel comfortable calling Jonathan by his first name, so she simply pretended not to hear his reminder.

The second the car pulled up to the hospital, she grabbed her bag and opened the door, ready to bid Jonathan goodbye and make her escape.

But before she could jump out, he suddenly grabbed her wrist.

“What's the rush?" he asked, furrowing his brows slightly. “Wait up. I'm coming with you."

Bethany paused, wondering if she had misheard. Did Jonathan actually plan on visiting her sick mother?
