Chapter: 383
Bethany frowned. “And why is that?"
"She said she has seen your daughter before. Apparently your daughter is very beautiful, and... she resembles Jonathan Bates, the president of the Bates Group. That's why she suspects that you might be his..."
When Bethany heard Jonathan's name, her heart skipped a beat.
"I have nothing to do with Jonathan Bates!" Bethany exclaimed suddenly.
The two people in front of her jumped, thinking they had unwittingly crossed a line again.
Bethany paused for a few seconds to collect herself, then dismissed the matter with a wave of her hand. "Let's move on. Be careful about what you say in the future. We live under the rule of law. If such accusations reach the courts, you could lose more than just money; it could affect your future career prospects."
“We understand! We're truly sorry, Ms. Holt."
Bethany, too drained to engage further, simply waved them off.
The conversation had sapped her energy, leaving her fingers trembling uncontrollably.
Even after all these years, she realized she couldn't completely detach Jonathan from her life.
Some people, she mused, were so impactful that they became unforgettable.
Back at the hotel, Aimee had just put Nola to bed.
Noticing Bethany's distracted state, Aimee worried that she had encountered more trouble.
"Is there something you need to talk about? Did they hassle you again?"
"No," Bethany replied with a forced smile, sitting on the edge of the bed facing Aimee. "Aimee, I think you and Nola should head back home tomorrow."
Aimee paused briefly, then nodded in agreement. "Alright! We'll go back and wait for you."
"Yeah."
Aimee didn't press for more details, understanding that Bethany wouldn't suggest such a thing without a significant reason.
Over the years, aside from financial motives, Bethany's resilience was also fueled by her responsibility towards her two children. Aimee knew she had to ensure nothing jeopardized the kids, or she would not only fail in her duties but potentially lose a dear friend.
“Don't worry. Nola is very thoughtful, and I'll look after her well. She's so excited about seeing her brother that it's hard to get her to sleep," Aimee reassured Bethany, hoping to lift her spirits.
Bethany's smile genuinely brightened when the conversation turned to her children.
The next morning, Bethany made sure a car was ready to take Aimee and Nola away before she headed to the construction site.
Arriving at the site, she was surprised to find Ryan's car parked at the entrance.
It was unusual for him to visit the site personally.
