"Then what was I supposed to do?" Nikolas had just exited the bar, where the noise seemed to fall away around him. "He bears such a striking resemblance to you. You two must be father and son. Otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered."

As someone who generally kept a distance from children, this was uncharacteristic for him.

“Stop drinking. Take the child to a hotel and stay there tonight. I'll return tomorrow."

Though Jonathan was unsure of the situation, the appearance of a child resembling him meant he needed to understand what was happening.

"Alright! I'll make sure he's safe with you tomorrow. After all, he might be your son!" Nikolas laughed. "Man, you really are something! Not knowing you have a son this age. When you get back, you've got some explaining to do!"

Jonathan felt a surge of headache.

He strained to remember any past events that could explain this, but came up empty.

After pondering for a moment, Jonathan reached for his phone and called Brody.

Brody likely had been asleep; his voice was rough and weary.

"Mr. Bates, how can I assist you?"

"I apologize for the late call, but I need to clarify something. You mentioned that Bethany's best friend, Aimee, might have a child. Is it a girl?"

There was a brief pause before Brody responded, "Yes! I reviewed the CCTV footage. When Bethany was in the hospital, Aimee rushed in with a little girl!"

“Are you certain it's a girl?"

“Absolutely! The child had a ponytail, clearly a little girl at first glance."

A throbbing pain started in Jonathan's temples.

He had thought the child was a boy.

"Does that girl bear any resemblance to me?" Jonathan asked.

Brody hesitated, caught off guard by the question. After all, he had only seen the grainy surveillance footage. "Not really."

But he wasn't sure.

"Then, it must not be..."

Jonathan struggled to articulate his emotions.

Just moments ago, he had speculated whether the child Aimee was with might be the same child Nikolas was babysitting. If that were true, it might mean he had a son with Bethany.

However, Brody's words quickly shattered that thought.

The child with Aimee was a girl, while the child with Nikolas was a boy. And Brody said the girl didn't look like him.
