Chapter: 56
"What?" Bethany replied, a mix of confusion and frustration in her voice. "But I'm the daughter of the patient!"
Initially, she assumed the hospital had beefed up security, but after inquiring, she discovered they were Jonathan's bodyguards.
After a thorough and lengthy verification process, she was finally allowed to enter the ward. As soon as Marie saw her daughter, she exclaimed, "Who are those men outside? They're terrifying! They even double-checked the doctor's identity before letting him in today."
Bethany set the lunch box down and explained, "Someone snuck into your ward, so the hospital is taking extra precautions."
"But don't you think this is a bit over the top? Besides, the other wards don't have any bodyguards." Marie suddenly remembered something.
“By the way, you haven't told me much about your boyfriend yet. What does he do exactly? He must come from money, right? I heard the ward costs ten thousand dollars a night. Tell me the truth. Don't try to hide it from me."
"Ten thousand dollars a night?" Bethany echoed in shock.
She had anticipated the VIP ward would be expensive, but this was beyond her expectations. Maybe one to two thousand dollars a night, but anything over ten thousand was unthinkable.
Seeing that Bethany was even more shocked than herself, Marie furrowed her brows anxiously.
“What does he want from you? He can't possibly be doing all of this for free." She paused, a look of panic crossing her face. "Do you think he plans on harvesting your organs?"
Bethany couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity. Only her mother could come up with such a ridiculous notion.
“Have you been watching too many TV shows?" she asked, shaking her head as she made the bed and cleaned the wheelchair. "Mom, guess what? I'm starting work at the head office next Monday! Oh, and I have to go on a business trip to Brokdon, so I won't be able to visit for a few days. Please take care of yourself, okay?"
"You're going back to Brokdon?" At the mention of that place, Marie's expression darkened.
“I'm going there for work, not a vacation. I have to follow the company's arrangements," Bethany clarified.
Besides, she had no emotional ties to Brokdon-no family, no friends, and certainly no fond memories worth revisiting.
"Then be careful. And when you return from your trip, make sure to bring your boyfriend over," Marie insisted. "I really want to meet him."
Now, at the mention of the so-called “boyfriend” again, Bethany made a face.
"He's very busy. He doesn't have time right now! He'll come when he's free," she replied, feeling a bit exasperated.
“Silly girl, I just want to see him for myself! Even if he's showering you with money now, that doesn't mean I'll accept him. Who knows? Maybe I can refuse the surgery and leave this god-forsaken hospital once and for all!"
Feeling helpless and not wanting to prolong the conversation, Bethany pulled over a chair and sat down.
As she checked her phone, she noticed a missed call from an unfamiliar number.
Worried it might be something important from the company, she quickly stepped outside the ward and called back.
After a few rings, a familiar voice answered.
“Bethany, is that you? Can you come to the head office now? I need to go over the Zucron Company project contract with you."
