Chapter: 589
“You're not surprised about me having a son," Jonathan suddenly said.
Bethany quickly composed herself, shrugging with a casual indifference. "Should I be surprised? We've been divorced for over four years. You're just a regular guy. Remarrying and having a child is perfectly normal."
"I announced my marriage this year."
"Oh, well then congratulations!" She offered the words with a thin smile, not wanting to delve further into the topic.
The mention of his new wife brought an unwelcome memory to her mind-the bite marks on his shoulder.
“I thought you'd be curious."
Bethany forced a professional smile, her voice clipped. “Mr. Bates, we're here for work. Now isn't the time to discuss your wife. I still have a huge load of project material to review. Let's just meet with the partners quickly so I can get back to the office and finish my tasks."
Jonathan, sensing her discomfort, nodded slightly and resumed driving towards East Shade Bay.
Moments later, they arrived at his house, a place Bethany had been just days ago.
Jonathan stepped out first, then opened the door for her with a courteous gesture.
Hesitating, Bethany asked, "Do I need to come in? Once you sort things out with your son, we can leave, right?"
"Considering his dietary needs, I cook for him myself. And you haven't had lunch either, have you? Come in."
Bethany waved her hand dismissively. "No! You're a married man, and I'm married woman. It's not appropriate for us to eat together."
“It's precisely because we both are married that there's no need to be wary."
Bethany was left speechless, her mind swirling with the oddity of his words, yet she found them strangely reasonable.
Just as she was weighing her options about entering the house, her phone rang from her bag.
Bethany quickly pulled it out, her heart skipping a beat as she saw Jayson's name flashing on the screen.
Stepping away from the car, she answered the call.
“Hello... Yeah, I'm at work... I haven't forgotten. You'll pick me up after work, and we'll go together! Alright... Okay, see you tonight!"
After hanging up, she looked up to meet Jonathan's eyes, which were now tinged with clear displeasure.
He hadn't left. He was still there, listening to her conversation.
Bethany pursed her lips, ready to challenge him for eavesdropping, but Jonathan spoke first.
"Jayson's picking you up after work?"
"Yes,"
