Chapter: 636
In Godfrey's arms, Francine wept uncontrollably, her eyes swollen.

"Godfrey, this is all Bethany's fault. How else would Maddie do such a thing? She was so kind and loved our son deeply. You must have that evil woman killed, or our family will never have peace."

With a stern look, Godfrey said, "Our family does owe Maddie a favor, but you've been her accomplice for too long. That's enough!"

"Our son is still in the emergency room, his life hanging by a thread. Why are you defending Bethany?”

“But Bethany isn't the one who stabbed my son!"

Francine was taken aback by the reprimand and stopped crying.

Finally, Godfrey stood up and looked at Bethany, who had been ejected from the hospital yet refused to leave. In a low voice, he said, “Calm down. The foreign doctors are ready. We're going abroad. Right now, the most important thing is to save Jonathan."

Bethany found herself abandoned outside the hospital. She watched helplessly as its doors shut and locked.

She loathed her helplessness in this dire moment.

It felt as though, in her relationship with Jonathan, she was always the one left waiting in the wings, while Jonathan took the reins and shielded her no matter the cost.

As nightfall crept in, the sky darkened Like an old bruise.

The night wind howled stronger, carrying the earthy smell that hinted at an impending storm.

Soon enough, thunder growled like a beast awakening from its slumber.

Bethany gazed up at the sealed doors, feeling as if there was an unbridgeable chasm separating her from the inside.

Those within couldn't step out, and those outside, like her, couldn't get in.

Rain and cold wind pelted down suddenly, washing the caked blood off her skin and soaking her flimsy clothes.

Yet Bethany stayed put. She summoned every ounce of her will to inch closer to the gate.

This was the nearest she could be to Jonathan.

She lost track of time and the rain, but eventually, Bethany felt the downpour cease above her.

She lifted her head slowly to see Jayson beside her, shielding her with a massive black umbrella.

"Bethany, let's go," he urged.

"No," she croaked, her voice barely audible.

Jayson crouched down, gently wiping the rain from her face with his sleeve. "Don't you get it? As long as you and Jonathan are together, you'll keep hurting each other. Without him, your life might be dull, but it'll be safe. And without you, he'd remain the proud, untouchable CEO!"

Each word from Jayson etched itself into Bethany's heart.
