Chapter: 675
He had always kept his distance from women, even in professional settings. Now, he felt accused by Bethany of something he hadn't done.
“How would I even know when you did that?" Bethany snapped.
Jonathan's perplexed look made her suspect he was putting on an act.
Her anger flared. “Look, it's your life, not mine. You don't have to act the saint with me. I'm not your wife. At best, I'm your ex-wife. Your personal life isn't my business."
She could rant about his supposed affairs over the past four years, but she had no right to judge. Those marks... They just made her uncomfortable.
"Wait!" Jonathan felt wrongly accused. "I don't have to pretend. I've never been with anyone else. It's the truth."
"I've already told you, I don't care. Why do you keep bringing it up?" she retorted.
"I need to," Jonathan insisted.
He couldn't confess to something he hadn't done, nor could he bear being falsely accused.
"Fine, that's your choice."
Bethany desperately wanted to turn the page. Dwelling on the past wasn't healthy. Even if Jonathan had been unfaithful, he still loved her. Harping on about it seemed pointless.
But as Jonathan continued to bring it up, Bethany found it hard to ignore.
"You were drunk that one time. Brody had to take you back to East Shade Bay," she reminded him.
After a moment, Jonathan replied, “Yes, I remember calling you. I wanted to see you, but you said you had nothing to say to me. You even called me disgusting for pestering you."
Bethany hadn't expected Jonathan to recall her harsh words so vividly; she had forgotten about it. “Anyway, that was the day you got drunk. I went to East Shade Bay to see you."
Jonathan was taken aback. He gazed at Bethany and inquired, "You came?"
"Yes!" Bethany nodded. “I was worried I'd upset you and I've been feeling guilty about it. Brody mentioned you were drinking and I thought you might need someone to look after you. But..."
That was when she noticed the bite marks on his skin, her heart feeling like it was being ripped apart. Even now, she struggled to come to terms with the sight.
“Did I say something to offend you?" he asked.
"No."
"Then what's bothering you?"
Taking a deep breath, Bethany explained, “I noticed more than one bite mark on your shoulder."
Jonathan was at a loss for words.
"Are you trying to say that Brody did that? You couldn't possibly bite your own shoulder!"
