Chapter: 89
Bethany understood her mother well. Marie would prefer death over using a man's money.
Perhaps learning about the marriage might change her mind.
Marie was shocked, not expecting that her normally straightforward daughter would keep her marriage a secret. She was silent for a long time, just staring at Bethany.
Worried her mother might pass out again, Bethany quickly went to fetch the doctor.
The doctor administered the medicine to lower her blood pressure just in time.
Marie didn't find her calm until the sun dipped below the horizon and evening cloaked the sky.
Lying in the bed, Marie didn't speak or close her eyes. She just gazed at the ceiling.
Bethany stood by, feeling like a child who had misbehaved.
"Did you really get married?" Marie suddenly asked.
"Yes," Bethany responded.
“Bring him here. I want to speak to him."
Bethany bit her lip hard and hesitated. "It's not that he doesn't want to come. He's just very busy with work."
“You married him to afford my surgery, didn't you?"
Marie wasn't naive. She understood that her daughter would do anything for her.
But she was also terrified that her daughter might endure the same hardships she had.
"No," Bethany replied firmly. "We married because we love each other. Mom, he really treats me well."
She meant it sincerely. Jonathan truly was a good man.
“Really? Then why hasn't he come to visit me?" Marie said.
Bethany found herself speechless.
"Alright. If you insist he's busy, I'll allow him some time. But I must meet him before the surgery. If I don't, I won't go through with it!"
After leaving the hospital, Bethany didn't head straight back to East Shade Bay, but instead walked to the seaside.
It was late at might, and the day's noise had dwindled. The only sounds were the waves crashing against the shore.
The wind was strong, whistling past her red and swollen cheek, causing a slight sting.
Bethany wrapped her arms around herself, feeling a bit dazed.
