Chapter: 913
"Yes," Bethany replied frankly. "Weren't you supposed to be at work? Why did you ask Brody to hide it from me? Where are you?"
“You care about me?"
“Enough with the bullshit!"
Bethany's simmering anger finally bubbled over.
She never thought Jonathan would Lie to her.
“I'll go back to the company to see you." Jonathan didn't tell her where he was.
Bethany's determination flared. “I'm going to find you! Tell me where you are."
"You won't want to know."
"Jesus Christ! Just tell me already, Jonathan!"
Silence stretched from the other end of the line. She could almost feel the weight of his hesitation.
“I'm in the cemetery," he finally replied.
Bethany's breath got caught in her throat. "What?"
“I'm at the gate of the cemetery, but I haven't gone in. Don't worry. I won't disturb your mother."
It was getting dark when Bethany arrived at the cemetery.
She had assumed Jonathan was with Brody, but when she arrived, she saw Brody sitting in the car, keeping a cautious distance, his eyes never leaving Jonathan's Lonesome figure.
Bethany stepped out of her car and broke into a trot, closing the distance between her and Jonathan.
The sight of him standing there, straight and unmoving, tugged at her heartstrings.
The ground around Jonathan was littered with cigarette butts, a silent testament to the number he had smoked. As Bethany approached, the thick smell of smoke filled her nostrils.
Hearing her footsteps, Jonathan turned, his eyes dull and his lips pressed into a tight line. His voice was raspy as he spoke.
"As you can see, I've been here a while; I wasn't off gallivanting with some woman behind your back."
“I don't doubt you," Bethany replied, her voice tinged with helplessness.
As she moved closer, Jonathan stepped back. "I reek of smoke."
“Why do you smoke so much anyway? You're still in recovery! Do you want to die from lung cancer?"
A bitter smile tugged at his lips. “Not yet."
