Chapter: 96
Bethany glanced at the living room sofa, where a neatly folded blanket lay.
“Did you end up sleeping in the living room?"
“Yes, I didn't want to wake you."
The house was soundproof, so Bethany hadn't heard any noise from outside during the night.
When Jonathan served the toast and fried eggs, he noticed Bethany was dressed for work.
He frowned. "Would you have skipped breakfast if I hadn't returned?"
"I'm not really hungry. I need to go to the office early to work on some data."
“Bethany, skipping meals can lead to stomach issues."
“Okay.”
Bethany felt discomfort at his words, thinking such concerns were more suited for Maddie.
“Come and have some breakfast."
"Okay."
They sat down together in silence, neither speaking. Bethany kept her head down, avoiding eye contact.
Eventually, Jonathan broke the silence. "You didn't finish what you were saying last night. Were you in trouble?"
“Last night? I was done talking. You've secured the best doctor and the finest room for my mother. Now, we're just waiting for her surgery date. What problems could I possibly have?"
“Really?”
Bethany gestured dismissively. “Why would I lie to you? You're pressing me too hard. It's embarrassing. My mother and I just had a minor argument. She was upset and slapped me."
Jonathan looked at Bethany's face, somewhat persuaded.
"How is Maddie doing? She seemed really committed to her work. I sent her a document at two in the morning the other day, and she responded immediately."
"She's recovering from appendicitis surgery."
"Good! Then make sure to give her some extra attention during this time."
Bethany knew a caring man could touch Maddie's heart, especially now.
Perhaps Maddie and Jonathan might reconcile soon.
"If Maddie's illness is related to work, we have designated staff to handle it," Jonathan said coolly.
