Chapter: 98
Everything she did was in anticipation of marrying Jonathan.
“We're just friends; don't make it into something it's not!" Nikolas seemed laid-back, but he was attentive when it mattered. "Do you need some water? You can't eat anything yet, according to the doctor."
Maddie shook her head, her face pallid.
"Then tell me what you do want."
“I want you to ask Jonathan to come here," she demanded.
Nikolas understood Maddie's intention. “Why are you doing this? He's genuinely interested in that girl."
In the past, Nikolas thought Jonathan's interest was a convenient excuse to avoid marriage. But seeing Jonathan's actions towards that girl convinced him of Jonathan's sincerity.
"Don't you think he's drawn to Bethany because she resembles me?"
Maddie asked.
Nikolas blinked, recalling Bethany's features. There was a resemblance! "But he doesn't need a substitute," he retorted.
Maddie was right there. Why would Jonathan seek out someone who looked like her?
“Maybe because he wants to defy his family's wishes.”
Nikolas remained silent, finding the idea a bit far-fetched.
Jonathan respected his parents and maintained a good relationship with them. Furthermore, he didn't seem like someone who would impulsively fall for just any woman.
“Could you just call him and say I'm really sick? I need to see him."
Maddie's voice was feeble, her plea was tinged with sadness.
Nikolas had known Maddie for years and had always seen her carry herself with grace and dignity. This was the first time he had witnessed her pleading so desperately.
"Alright," Nikolas said and sighed before leaving the room.
In a secluded corner of the corridor, he lit a cigarette and dialed Jonathan's number while taking a drag.
Jonathan answered after a while. "What's up?"
“Maddie's really sick, and I can't manage alone. If you're available, please come and help!"
“I need to head home early today."
Anticipating this response, Nikolas exhaled sharply in frustration.
"I'm not trying to guilt you, but don't you think you should show a bit of concern for Maddie? She had acute appendicitis from working late. She's not just your childhood friend but also, as head of Bates Group, it's only right you visit her, don't you think?"
