Chapter: 26
Meanwhile, back at the Oasis Studio, Nora had returned, appearing much more reserved than usual.
The plagiarism scandal had taken a toll on her, and it was evident she needed time to heal.
"Let's go out to eat. Tonight's on me," Phoebe declared, rallying the employees for a meal. With the threat of bankruptcy now behind them, they had good reason to celebrate.
Kaitlin momentarily put her bad mood aside and joined in the festivities, enjoying the food, drinks, and conversation.
The evening was filled with laughter and joy.
Kaitlin sipped her drink sparingly, staying sober and alert.
After dinner, she and Phoebe were ready to leave.
Just as they stepped through the door, Dylan appeared.
"Mrs. Hewitt, do you have a moment? There's something I need to discuss with you," he greeted.
Kaitlin frowned. "Please, don't call me Mrs. Hewitt."
"Apologies, old habits die hard."
"If it's important, say it now. It's getting late."
Dylan glanced at Phoebe, who stood close by, her expression resolute, and reluctantly nodded.
He presented some documents and presented them to Kaitlin.
“Miss Gilbert, per Mr. Hewitt's instructions, there's a downtown apartment he wishes to transfer to your name, and here's a blank check. Fill it out for whatever amount you need."
The check bore Alan's signature, making it official.
Kaitlin refused to accept it. "What is Alan trying to imply with this?"
"Mr. Hewitt mentioned that you walked away empty-handed and might be short of funds. He considers this as restitution."
Kaitlin scoffed, her disdain evident, "I've made it clear I want nothing from him."
“Please consider it, Miss Gilbert. The transfer is complete. You can move in anytime. I'll take care of the logistics.”
Dylan had planned for every contingency. Yet, if Kaitlin refused, he would be left unable to fulfill his task.
At that moment, as they reached a deadlock, Phoebe intervened, seizing the documents and the check from Dylan.
"Why wouldn't you take it, Kaitlin? You're not thinking clearly. You've practically been a servant to the Hewitts for three years. Given all of Alan's wealth, this is just pocket change."
Spotting an opportunity, Dylan quickly chimed in, "Miss Gilbert, please, accept it. Consider it a gesture of goodwill from Mr. Hewitt."
