It was almost noon.
Kaitlin dismissed him with a wave of her hand and continued her painting. “I'm not done yet. I'll eat later," she said firmly.
“But you have to consider the baby," Alan insisted gently.
Kaitlin caressed her swollen belly thoughtfully and then conceded.
She closed her file and stood up. "Let's go," she agreed.
Alan was glad though he didn't show it. He took her bag, and they walked out together.
A group of girls approached them.
“Kaitlin, are you going on a date?" one of them teased.
Kaitlin remained silent.
"It's just lunch. Tell Kaitlin what you'd like, and I'll bring it back for you later," Alan responded with a smile.
His comment was met with cheers from the office.
Kaitlin was surprised.
Alan had always been known for his arrogance. Yet here he was, being so courteous.
Kaitlin's heart fluttered unexpectedly.
“Let's go," she repeated.
Alan purposely chose Kaitlin's favorite restaurant.
Once seated, he initiated a light conversation as they waited for their meat.
“When is your next prenatal checkup?" he asked.
"Tomorrow," Kaitlin said softly.
“I'll pick you up," he offered.
"No, thanks. Phoebe is coming with me," she responded, a hint of indifference in her voice.
Phoebe and she had already arranged to go together.
"Okay, take care," Alan said, accepting her decision without further argument.
Kaitlin was taken aback by his lack of persistence.
