Chapter: 317
"Yes... I did it." Cornered, the assistant had no option but to shoulder the blame.
Kaitlin and Alan exchanged skeptical glances, clearly unconvinced.
How could Marcia's assistant malign Kaitlin without any provocation?
A wave of relief washed over Marcia as she heard the confession. "Mr. Gilbert, this was my oversight. I was wrong about her, but I'll handle it immediately."
All Marcia desired now was to divert suspicion away from herself.
If Denton erupted in anger, she feared she might crumble.
"Wait!" Denton, sharp as ever, sensed the inconsistency. "You claim she's responsible, but why would she do this? She doesn't even know Ms. Gilbert. What motive could she possibly have?"
Narcia's anxiety surged. She bit her lip, a twinge of unease seeping through.
With a discreet wink, she urged her assistant to concoct a plausible excuse.
The assistant trembled with fear, her whole body shaking. "Mr. Gilbert, it's... It's just a misunderstanding," she stammered.
"A misunderstanding? If you don't explain yourself clearly today, you'll find life very difficult here in Estresa. Now, tell me!"
Denton said sternly.
Her knees buckled under the weight of her fear. "Mr. Gilbert, I swear I didn't do it. It was..."
She knew she had to clear things up. Offending Marcia was a far better option than crossing the president of Gilbert Jewelry, given the Gilbert family's towering influence in Estresa.
"So who was it?" Denton demanded.
The assistant lifted her gaze to Marcia, who flinched.
“Why are you staring at me? Haven't I been good to you? Are you trying to say I put you up to this? You fucking bitch! Stop spouting lies!" Marcia's nerves snapped, and she shoved her assistant hard, sending her tumbling to the floor.
Marcia opened her mouth to argue further, but Denton cut her off.
"Enough, Marcia! You're not needed for the second round this afternoon. Go pack your things. You're fired," Denton declared icily.
Kaitlin watched from the sidelines, secretly pleased with the outcome.
It was good that Denton had the sense to handle the situation, though she still puzzled over Marcia's animosity toward her and her persistent attempts to undermine her.
"Marcia, are you familiar with me?" Kaitlin asked.
Marcia's complexion turned ashen as she struggled to process Denton's words.
"Mr. Gilbert, this isn't fair. I've been with the company for years and have contributed so much!" Marcia protested, her eyes quickly welling with tears. She was not ready to accept this result.
