Chapter: 100
Bethany didn't look down on the less fortunate, but she just couldn't comprehend her mother's perspective.
She was convinced that marrying a dishonest man would lead to betrayal, regardless of his financial status. Dealing with infidelity from a less wealthy man would only irritate her further.
Now fully understanding Marie's stance, Bethany wondered who she could safely bring to meet her mother.
Whoever it was seemed doomed to a rough reception from Marie.
"So, I need to check him out for you. You'll only marry once I approve of him!" Marie insisted.
"Okay. I'll bring him to see you," Bethany responded, feeling helplessly.
Work was already demanding, and now her mother was piling on more pressure. Finding a fake husband felt harder than pulling all-nighters and crafting business proposals.
After ending the call, Bethany leaned against the wall and sighed deeply.
She couldn't dwell on it long, though, as the evaluation for the SNS project was approaching fast. The project's fate hinged on this phase.
Regaining her composure, Bethany returned to her office to prepare the necessary documents.
The day passed by quickly.
The good news was that their project was approved, and SNS chose to proceed with them. The bad news was that Jonathan would take her to the hospital to see Maddie.
Bethany wanted to ask Jonathan how many more awkward situations she had to endure in front of Maddie to stir up her jealousy. Couldn't he think of another strategy? Deep down, Bethany wanted to reveal the truth to Maddie, all for Jonathan's sake.
But then she realized that ending the contract now would be disastrous.
As the workday neared its end, Bethany hoped that Brody would ask her to work late-even all night would be preferable.
Unfortunately, her hopes were dashed when Jonathan called right on time.
“Meet me in the underground parking lot."
Bethany sighed and said, “Okay.”
Bethany left her office with a heavy heart, rode the elevator down, and walked to the CEO's reserved parking spot.
When Jonathan saw Bethany, he stepped out of the driver's seat and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. I'm just really tired." Bethany was tempted to feign illness and claim she couldn't go. But Jonathan had compensated her generously and asked for little in return. If she made excuses now, he might consider terminating their arrangement.
After all, she really needed the money.
“Then I'll drive you back so you can rest," Jonathan said promptly.
Bethany was taken aback. “Really? Is that okay?" Was it possible she wouldn't have to visit Maddie?
