Chapter: 146
Bethany was at a loss for words. She was not as innocent as Brody thought.
Bethany was already uncomfortable, and the thought of sharing a car with Jonathan only heightened her unease. The embarrassment might just make her hair stand on end!
Brody said, "Mr. Bates owns several cars in Canbidge. I'll hand you the car keys once we get there."
"But I'm not skilled at driving. I fear I might damage Mr. Bates' car."
Brody gave her a smile and lifted an eyebrow. “Don't worry! Mr. Bates has a whole collection of cars in his Canbidge garage. If you happened to damage one, it would go unnoticed. Actually, you could probably sell a few."
Hearing this, Bethany managed a strained smile. She was torn between marveling at Jonathan's wealth and feeling disheartened that her excuse had been dismissed once more.
During the flight, Brody and some colleagues held a quick meeting.
Bethany listened intently but found many concepts baffling. She silently admired Brody's capability.
Once the flight attendant served the meals, Brody returned to his seat.
Bethany noticed he was holding a risk mitigation report.
“Does Creation Group's new scientific research project really affect Bates Group that much?"
"Yes. The project promises substantial returns, but it's fraught with challenges that need addressing." Brody gestured at the stack of research papers. "I'll likely spend the next few months buried in this work."
Bethany then saw the silver strands in his hair. "Does your family mind you working so hard?" She knew Brody almost stayed in Bates Group 24 hours a day.
Brody sipped his coffee. “Both my parents are overseas."
“And your wife?"
“I'm not married." Brody displayed his unadorned ring finger. “Now's the time for me to pour all my energy into my career!"
“No surprise you're so high up in Bates Group. It's clearly because of your dedication."
Brody waved his hand and smiled. "Don't give me too much credit. In our industry, few people get married early. I'm so swamped with work, I wish there were forty-eight hours in a day. If I had a wife and children, it wouldn't be fair to them. I wouldn't have time to spend with them."
Bethany nodded understandingly.
In many modern marriages, neglecting family duties often leads to divorce, leaving the children to suffer the most.
"Mr. Bates isn't married yet. Maddie has been close to him for a long time, yet there's been no advancement. It's probably because he's so focused on his career."
Upon hearing that, Bethany blushed and smiled sheepishly.
"Back when Mr. Bates was a student, did many girls fancy him?"
Brody's curiosity about Jonathan's past sparked suddenly.
