Chapter: 158
Bethany watched as he began unbuttoning his shirt, revealing his fair chest one button at a time. Panic surged through her, and she quickly averted her gaze.

"What are you doing?" she asked.

"The coffee spilled on my sleeve during the meeting. I'm just changing my shirt." Jonathan continued undressing as if she weren't there, making her feel like she was overreacting.

Bethany lowered her head, wishing she could bury herself in the documents.

Thankfully, Jonathan took his clothes to the bathroom soon after. If he hadn't, she might've ended up with a serious neck cramp from avoiding eye contact.

As the sound of running water filled the room, Bethany rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on.

Since the car accident, Jonathan had gone abroad on a business trip.

It seemed he was deliberately distancing himself from her and wanted to end their contract. But why hadn't he mentioned it when he came back?

Did he quarrel with Maddie again?

Was that why he returned to Canbidge from Watimere alone?

These questions were more perplexing than any of the materials she had to review. Whenever she brought up ending their marriage, he flat -out rejected the idea and even reminded her of the liquidated damages.

So, what was really going on?

Had she, the substitute, not been laid off yet?

When Jonathan emerged from the bathroom after his shower, he noticed Bethany's worried expression.

He approached her while drying his wet hair with a towel.

"Go to my room and get the ointment from the table. The code is 0825."

Bethany stood up at Jonathan's request and nodded. “Okay.”

Bates Group owned shares in the hotel, so Jonathan was the only one who knew the code to the presidential suite's door.

Bethany retrieved the ointment for Jonathan. On her way back to his room, she began to reflect.

Jonathan had kept the same password for a long time, which suggested his feelings for Maddie remained unchanged. Perhaps they had just had a minor argument.

Although her initial plan to end their marriage might be pointless, she felt an odd relief.

Bethany was conflicted.

On one side, she wanted to step back from Jonathan and Maddie's relationship and stop being anyone's stand-in.

On the other hand, the thought of separating from Jonathan after the contract ended left her feeling unexpectedly sad.
