Chapter: 160
How could they possibly face them together?
"I can't, but Jayson can?" Jonathan's frown deepened, and he fixed Bethany with a penetrating look.
After pausing to think for a few seconds, she didn't answer directly.
Instead, she asked, "This time, my mother demanded I bring my husband to see her, or she wouldn't go through with the surgery. So, I took Jayson to the hospital. I thought we could muddle through, but she suddenly wanted his parents to come too. If it had been you, could your parents have made it?"
Jonathan was at a loss for words.
Obviously not.
This was clear to both Jonathan and Bethany.
After all, they came from a prominent family.
"So, do you see what I mean?" Bethany asked cautiously.
But Jonathan remained silent.
He pressed his lips together, dressed quickly, and left the room abruptly without applying the ointment.
Watching him go, Bethany sighed.
She hoped that Jonathan's feelings for Maddie wouldn't complicate her life. She also wished he would recognize that she wasn't Maddie but just a stand-in of low status.
After Jonathan left, he didn't return. Bethany washed her face and resumed working at the desk.
At six o'clock in the evening, Brody knocked on the door.
"Hand over the part you've reviewed. You have three more days for the rest. Since you're staying at the hotel, just work as much as you can. I'll talk to Mr. Bates about including your name."
Bethany signaled okay, but she was puzzled.
“Brody, if I'm not needed for the meetings or the due diligence, why did you bring me to Canbidge?"
He could have emailed the documents for her to review at the office.
Why was she brought to Canbidge if she didn't need to step outside?
“It was Mr. Bates' decision. I'm not sure of the specifics. He might have other tasks for you."
"Mr. Bates' decision?"
“Yes! As a secretary, no matter how important I am, I can't decide who gets to follow the project without approval."
Bethany frowned slightly. "Did he specifically ask for me to come?"
