Chapter: 167
Shortly after, Carson called back.
“Why is this taking so long? This is urgent!"
"Mr. Smith... I can't locate the record of sending Maddie the drawings."
"What?" Carson was alarmed.
"Don't worry. I'll call Maddie and record our conversation. That should provide the proof we need."
Carson looked frustrated and wasn't interested in continuing the conversation. "Fine, but make it quick."
After the call, Bethany tried to reach Maddie, but her phone was out of service.
She then checked the company's internal system and located an alternate number for Maddie.
"Hello, this is Maddie Hinchcliffe." Her voice was gentle, the same tone she often used with Jonathan.
Bethany hit the record button and said, "Miss Hinchcliffe, it's Bethany! You called earlier, requesting the technical drawings for the Zucron Company project. Can you clarify why you needed them?"
"The technical drawings for the Zucron Company project?" Maddie raised her voice. "Bethany, are you certain about that? I oversee the legal department. That information isn't necessary for me.”
Bethany was at a loss for words.
“We deal with contract reviews and signings. Isn't your team responsible for the project details?"
Bethany clenched her fists and scowled. "But you did ask me for the drawings!"
“Bethany, I've already explained, we don't require the drawings."
In that moment, Bethany realized she was ensnared.
It was all a setup. Maddie was gunning to oust her from Bates Group-possibly even from the entire investment field.
Her brow furrowed as she spoke. "I never meant to compete with you over anything."
Bethany understood her position all too well.
Yet, it was clear Maddie had no plans of letting her off easily.
"I'm not sure what you mean," Maddie responded with her voice still calm and collected. “If that's all, I need to get back to work."
"You're aware of what this is about. Is this because of Jonathan? You're trying to frame me!" Bethany chose to confront Maddie, tired of any pretense.
“Because of Mr. Bates? Bethany, I'd think carefully before making such accusations." With that, Maddie ended the call.
Bethany almost called her back; her finger hovered over the screen, but she refrained.
