Chapter: 49
“By the way, SNS headquarters is in Brokdon," Jonathan’ said, reverting the subject to work. “I'll be going there next month; you should join me."
Bethany nodded eagerly, grinning from ear to ear.
The next morning, when Bethany arrived at the office, she received an email from Carson.
It turned out that Zucron Company suddenly agreed to the third-party loan and was willing to sign the guarantee based on the actual capital.
"Did you talk to them again? How'd you manage to change their mind?"
Surprised by the result, Carson went to Bethany's office to ask her about it in person.
She shook her head. "Maybe they reconsidered."
Naturally, she couldn't tell Carson that Jonathan had used Zucron Company's scandal as leverage to force them to compromise.
"At least the project ended up being a success, despite all the difficulties along the way." Although Carson was far from kind or friendly, his attitude towards Bethany had noticeably softened. "Work hard, Bethany. I hope you learn something useful at the head office. And don't make us look bad, okay?"
“Okay". Bethany grinned at him.
Shortly after Carson left, Aimee entered and rolled her eyes in disdain.
“If you hadn't found out about Zucron Company's financial issues, this project would've been a total disaster. Not only did he take all the credit in the end, but he even blamed you for his oversight! The audacity!"
"Well, at the end of the day, he's our manager," Bethany said graciously. "At least we still get our bonus!"
Still, Aimee pouted. "Forget about him. How's your mom?"
"She's doing really well. Oh, and they've already set a date for her surgery, since the hospital agreed to let me pay for it in installments."
“That's great, Bethany! Now, you don't have to worry so much!" With a mischievous glint in her eye, she jabbed her finger in the direction of the office across the hall. "So, when are you going to get a boyfriend?"
At the mention of a boyfriend, Bethany visibly recoiled, as though it was a dirty word.
Indeed, this word was taboo in front of her mother, and now it was also forbidden in Jonathan's presence.
"I don't need a boyfriend."
"Stop joking around. As your best friend, it's my duty to tell you that Howell's the only decent guy in our company. If he settles for someone else, you'll regret it!" Aimee pulled up a chair and sat down, putting her feet up on the desk as though she owned the place.
"You turned down his advances before, but he hasn't gone after anyone else yet. Think about it, Bethany!"
Bethany, however, was not interested. Without looking up from her computer, she replied dryly, "I'm not good enough for him."
"What on earth are you talking about? You're gorgeous!" Aimee exclaimed indignantly. “Even Mr. Bates fell in love with someone who looks like you. What do you think that means, hmm?"
Finally, Bethany glanced up from her computer, rendered speechless.
