"You're overreacting! Consider this. It had to be someone who was looking for the boy. Otherwise, how could they know his exact location? There are countless hotels in Odonset!" Maddie said.

Nikolas paused to think before nodding in agreement.

Theoretically, this idea made sense.

"When Jonathan returns, how are we supposed to explain this?" he asked.

Jonathan returned solely for this child.

"What else can you possibly say? Just tell Jonathan it was all a joke! I can keep the employees quiet about this," Maddie offered.

However, after considering it, Nikolas turned down her offer of "kindness."

“I can't lie to him. The child was here. I have to let Jonathan confirm if this boy is truly his son. If he is, what could the other party possibly want?" Nikolas knew he might face reprimand, but it was better than risking harm to Jonathan later.

Now that they saw the boy, it was time for Jonathan to dig deeper.

There had to be some clues.

"What other motive could there be if not for money? The other party must have felt it wasn't the right moment and decided to take the child back! Jonathan's been overwhelmed lately. He's on edge. Why do you always make things harder for him?" Maddie frowned, feeling helpless. "I can't tell if this is really for Jonathan's benefit or not."

“Can you just cut the nonsense already?" Nikolas was visibly frustrated. He suddenly turned to Maddie. "Are you feeling better now?"

She could even stand here and argue with him.

"Yes, I felt much better after seeing the doctor." Maddie hesitated for a moment before feigning innocence. "What's going on? Do you think I took the child? He was with you, not me. I was in the car with you when he disappeared!"

Rubbing his brow, Nikolas replied, "I never said it was you."

“IT don't care! You can explain everything to Jonathan. I'm heading back to the company."

With that, she walked out of the hotel.

Before Nikolas could rest for a bit, Jonathan called.

"I'm in Odonset now. I'm heading back from the airport. Where are you and the kid?"

"I'm currently at the hotel," Nikolas replied. But the child was missing.

"Share the location with me. I'll get there as soon as I can."

"Jonathan, it looks like the boy's family took him back. I stepped away for just a moment, and then he was gone." Nikolas bit the bullet and told Jonathan the truth.
