Chapter: 498
Jonathan fixed him with a stern look, his voice even as he said, “When you're drunk, do you truly not recall who you are with?"
Nikolas found himself at a loss for words. That was a good point.
After all, a truly drunk man couldn't even function properly. How could he engage intimately with someone?
If sober, he would certainly remember what the woman looked like.
Not to mention other considerations, like whether the woman was trustworthy or what her background was.
"So, you're certain the child is three or four years old?"
Nikolas shook his head emphatically. "No, no, no, I just guessed. He knows nothing. I can't tell if he's hiding it or truly doesn't know. If it's your child, he would naturally be taller than others, so my guess might be off."
“You mean..."" Jonathan hoped the boy was his son. He was so eager for an answer that he dared not think about it too much, fearing disappointment.
"What?" Nikolas asked.
Jonathan looked Nikolas straight in the eye and asked in a very serious voice, "Could it be Bethany's child?"
Perhaps she became pregnant after their divorce and had the child without his knowledge.
Nikolas dismissed the idea with a firm wave of his hand.
“Absolutely not! Listen, when you two were finalizing your divorce, I saw Bethany at the hospital. She was there for a medical check-up."
Jonathan was unaware of this. Hearing it now, he furrowed his brow and asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"
“Why would I tell you that? She was set on divorcing at that time. She visited the doctor because she was having trouble getting pregnant. I once thought maybe that was why she wanted to divorce you, but I realized later that wasn't the case."
The reason Bethany wanted to divorce Jonathan was that her mother died because of Maddie and his parents.
But Nikolas wouldn't tell Jonathan that. He couldn't approve of what Maddie and Jonathan's parents had done, but if he told Jonathan, it would lead to a fight.
How would Jonathan then handle things with his parents?
And that wouldn't help Jonathan to get back with Bethany. What had happened was irreversible, and besides, Jonathan's mother might get too emotional and die.
Nikolas preferred to avoid that outcome.
“She couldn't get pregnant?" Jonathan asked.
"No!" Nikolas replied. "I overheard the doctor telling her to go home and discuss it with her husband."
“Are you certain the doctor was referring to her inability to conceive, and not... perhaps her being pregnant?"
Nikolas was taken aback.
