Chapter: 506
Her words planted seeds of doubt in Nikolas' mind.

Could it be he had accused her unfairly?

"Promise me you didn't take the child away."

"I promise! If I did, may I suffer a terrible fate!" Maddie declared this boldly. After all, she never believed in such things.

People often spoke of divine blessings or retributions, but as a child, she had knelt countless times, praying to escape her days filled with fear and secrecy.

Were her prayers ever answered? No! The gods had never protected her!

The derision, the disdainful stares-they never abated.

If blessings were non-existent, why would curses hold any sway?

"Fine, I'll trust you for now." Nikolas exhaled and ended the call.

Perhaps he had reacted too impulsively, panicking and clutching at any clue.

Although he disapproved of Maddie's recent behaviors, he did not want to accuse her unjustly. After all, she was the only one he truly cherished.

Maddie had once shone so brightly.

At the hospital, the director promptly welcomed Jonathan upon his arrival.

He took care not to show any neglect.

"Mr. Bates! I wasn't expecting you today. Forgive me for not being ready to greet you!"

Jonathan gave him a brief look, not in the mood for courtesies.

"I need you to gather all of Bethany's medical records for me right away, and make sure not a single page is missing."

"Alright, alright! I'll start working on it immediately!"

The director instructed his subordinates to retrieve the files.

Privacy was no longer a concern; upsetting this influential man could threaten the very survival of the hospital.

Jonathan sat quietly in a chair. The tension was so noticeable that no one dared to breathe too loudly.

The silence was shattered by the ringing of Jonathan's phone.

It was Francine calling.

Jonathan had already ignored her call once, but she persisted and called again.
