Chapter: 527
"Then let's focus on something else. Nola and Rowan are waiting for you."

Bethany wiped her tears hastily. "Okay. I might not be able to come back tonight. I'll try tomorrow.”

“Do you think I'd leave you alone in Odonset?" Jayson chuckled.

“Bethany, look to your right."

Bethany instinctively turned towards where Jayson had indicated.

There he was, not far off, clutching his phone with a smile aimed her way.

“Over here!" he called out.

Spotting Jayson, a wave of mixed emotions swept over Bethany.

She couldn't deny the warmth she felt, yet it was more akin to the love for a family member than a romantic partner.

Often, Bethany pondered whether her feelings for Jayson would have deepened if Jonathan hadn't been her first love.

However, these musings always circled back to a reality where Jonathan didn't exist.

Bethany rose and walked towards him at a measured pace. "Jayson, why are you still here?"

"I couldn't just leave you here in Odonset alone. So I arranged for a friend to take Aimee and the kids to safety. Don't worry, he's a trustworthy old friend. He won't let us down."

It wasn't the safety of her family that troubled Bethany, yet she felt compelled to ask, “And you've been waiting all this time?"

“I stayed to keep you company," Jayson answered, his voice soft and comforting. “Are you ready to leave? Let's go."

Bethany nodded and trailed after Jayson.

The wind was picking up, hinting that rain might be on its way—typical of summer's sudden showers.

"Maybe we should find somewhere to stay first? We can head out in the morning," Bethany proposed.

Jayson paused, his back tensing briefly before he turned around with a smile. "Sounds good! You seem a bit off today. Let's check into a hotel, have a relaxing bath, and sleep in. We'll leave after a good rest tomorrow. The kids will be fine with Aimee. They love her."

Bethany nodded again, managing a small, forced smile.

Jayson likely knew the reason behind her sudden shift from wanting to leave immediately to agreeing to stay overnight.

Yet, he felt it wasn't his place to challenge her decision.

More than anything, he wished for her happiness.

That was his priority.
