Chapter: 671
Samira gently patted her shoulder. "No need to worry! He's in good shape. I value my reputation as a doctor. But you, my dear, need to take better care of your legs. Jonathan is right; your health is paramount."
“I just broke my legs, and I've already had surgery.”
“But your wounds show signs of infection. Did you come here straight after the surgery without proper rest?" Samira's trained eyes quickly assessed the situation.
Caught red-handed, Bethany offered a sheepish smile. “I was worried about him..."
"I get it. But now that he is on the mend, it's time to shift your focus back to yourself." Samira stepped behind Bethany's wheelchair and began pushing it forward. "Come with me, and I'll take a proper Look."
Having argued enough, Bethany relented with a gracious smile. “Thank you, Dr. Shaw."
"You're welcome!" Samira's eyes sparkled with warmth. “Honestly, seeing the way you two care for each other is like witnessing a fairy tale. It makes me believe true love still graces this world.”
Bethany glanced back at her, curiosity piqued. "You've never been in love?"
Samira pouted slightly, a wistful expression crossing her face. "I'm a medical student. My life revolves around the lab and the hospital. The men I meet are mostly mentors or fellow doctors. No sparks there."
Bethany listened on.
“In my years of practice, I've encountered many elderly couples who prioritize money over everything, even in the face of life and death.”
Bethany's eyes widened as the implications sank in. "You mean they refuse to spend money on their partners’ treatment?"
“Exactly! Some people would rather let their spouse suffer than part with their savings." Samira sighed deeply, a cloud of melancholy passing over her face. "It makes me wary of marriage. The dark side of human nature is quite frightening."
Bethany initially wanted to express shock, but then Andrew's face flashed in her mind.
Her mother had languished in the hospital for years, with her father, Andrew, neither paying a single bill nor visiting.
If Jonathan hadn't come into her life, she might have abandoned the notion of love entirely.
“But witnessing the love between you and Jonathan and his willingness to put his life on the line for you, I believe in love again."
"Jonathan... He's actually very silly." Bethany chuckled, recalling how the formidable president of Bates Group would gaze at her with an endearingly timid expression.
She was probably the only one privy to this side of him.
"You call him silly; be careful or I'll tell his father!" Clearly, Samira didn't grasp the full depth of their story, still thinking Bethany was the cherished daughter-in-law of the Bates family.
Hearing Samira mention Jonathan's father so casually, Bethany surmised that the two families must have a close relationship.
"You and Jonathan's father.."
"My father and Jonathan's have been friends for many years. I used to visit them often as a child, though I rarely saw Jonathan. He was usually busy with his studies at home, while I was being raised abroad," Samira explained.
As they chatted, they walked towards Samira's consulting room.
