He hadn't even been aware of the blind date!

Nikolas balled his fists and marched toward Aimee's parents' apartment.

He knocked on the door several times until Aimee's father opened it.

Confronted with someone he didn't recognize, her father looked him over carefully, a hint of suspicion in his eyes. “Can I help you?"

“Aimee is going on a blind date?" Nikolas was past the point of courtesy, his tone sharp and urgent.

Aimee's father eyed him for a tense few moments, then asked cautiously, "Do you need something?"

"Give me her phone number."

"Young man, you don't even have Aimee's number? That suggests she hasn't chosen to give it to you. I'm not sure of your relationship with her, but she isn't here right now. If you need to speak with her, you'll have to wait until she returns."

Before Nikolas could respond, Aimee's father closed the door on him.

Nikolas considered knocking again but realized it was pointless.

Aimee wasn't there.

He headed back downstairs, where the man was still waiting.

“Mr. Bennett.."

"Go away. You're no longer involved in this."

Nikolas walked back to his car, pulled out a cigarette, and lit it.

"Well played, Aimee! Truly remarkable!"

Nikolas slammed his fist against the steering wheel, his teeth clenched tight.

It wasn't just the fact that she was seeing another man. The real sting was that he was left waiting outside her parents' home, completely unable to reach her.
