Chapter: 897
"Don't do this again " Jonathan inhaled deeply and fetched the first-aid kit.
Bethany quietly allowed him to dress her wound. Resting her cheek against his arm, she whispered, “Don't be mad, okay?"
"I'm not mad."
"But you seem upset!" Bethany blinked at him. "Smile. You don't look good like that.”
Jonathan put the first-aid kit away, then turned around and swept her into his arms, carrying her to the bedroom.
He left the lights off but gently laid Bethany on the bed. The afternoon sun was weak as it filtered through the window, casting a soft light on her face.
They gazed into each other's eyes. After a prolonged silence, Jonathan sighed.
"I'm not mad. I'm just puzzled by why."
"Stop puzzling over it." He would discover the reason in half a month anyway.
“Are you upset that I wasn't there when your mother died?" This thought saddened Jonathan. “I swear, I had no idea."
If he had known, he would never have left Bethany.
“I don't hold it against you. It's been a long time. You shouldn't feel guilty about it." She had survived those tough days. She simply preferred not to talk about them now.
“Bethany... Promise me, no matter what, you'll let me face it with you."
Bethany looked deeply into Jonathan's eyes for a while before asking, “Who is more important to you, your mother or me?"
"You two are incomparable."
"What if one day I have a serious conflict with her? A conflict so severe it can't be resolved. Who would you choose, then?"
At that, Jonathan blinked and replied in a soothing tone, “I won't let you suffer any grievance."
Jonathan was well aware of his mother's nature. She was unyielding and difficult to manage. Despite any disagreements Bethany might have with his mother, he remained steadfast in his belief in Bethany's integrity.
He had no doubt that she was not the type to cause unnecessary trouble.
"You're going to find yourself in a difficult situation, aren't you?"
Bethany said with a playful touch on his chest and a smile. "I don't want to see you in that position, especially when you're so concerned about me not being wronged."
Jonathan took her hands in his, his expression serious and filled with sincerity. "As long as you choose to stay by my side, nothing else is important."
His sole desire was for Bethany to remain with him.
Bethany returned his gaze with a gentle smile, choosing not to comment further. “I've prepared a variety of dishes. Are you planning to leave them untouched in the dining room?"
