Chapter: 923
He still remembered how uneasy he had felt after putting the letter on Bethany's desk. He had been so restless that he'd made up an excuse to leave the classroom and go play basketball with his classmates.
Even as he played, he found that he couldn't concentrate, which caused him to lose miserably. All he was able to think about was what her response might be.
Would she refuse or accept?
When the bell finally rang, he returned to the classroom, where he saw the letter in Bethany's hand. A wave of sadness and disappointment washed over him at this sight.
Jonathan returned to his seat, crestfallen. Bethany turned to him and asked in a whisper, “Is this yours?"
“Um... Yes."
“Here, take it."
Jonathan reluctantly took the letter from her and found that it had not been opened.
His countenance fell even more.
Bethany hadn't even bothered to open the letter.
“You receive quite a number of love letters from people. I thought that was one of them. I asked you if it was yours, and you said it was," Bethany said with a frown.
"I didn't say anything wrong," Jonathan said.
"You're right."
Bethany and Jonathan looked at each other and burst into laughter.
He suddenly tightened his arms around her and asked, "If you knew it was a love letter I wrote to you, would you have read it?"
Bethany was taken aback. It was something to ponder.
At the time, she hadn't imagined that such an outstanding guy would have a crush on her.
He was the most handsome boy at school, top of his class, and from a wealthy family-so esteemed that even the headmaster showed him extra respect. And this person had a crush on her? Bethany could hardly believe it.
Back then, Jonathan was very reserved, not one to show his emotions freely. He maintained a strict sense of personal boundaries, rarely speaking to her unless necessary, even though they were desk mates.
“I might have thought you were making fun me, but you didn't seem like someone who would do this." Bethany still couldn't imagine how she would have reacted.
Regardless, she wouldn't have agreed to be his girlfriend.
When Bethany was in junior high, Marie was preparing for her second surgery. Bethany was consumed with earning money. She devoted all her spare time to part-time jobs, and any remaining moments went to her studies.
Romance was the furthest thing from her mind.
“You're probably better off not reading it."
