Chapter: 934
For a brief moment, the only sound was the snipping of Samira's scissors.
Suddenly, Samira stopped and whispered to Jonathan, “Did your father tell you?"
“What ?"
"He wants me to marry you."
The last time Samira was summoned home, she thought she was heading to a blind date, but instead, her parents informed her she was expected to marry Jonathan.
Naturally, she was opposed to the idea.
Samira had witnessed Jonathan's deep love for Bethany during her time in the hospital.
Agreeing to marry him would mean wrecking a home, a role she refused to play.
But the business world was ruthless, and the Shaw family couldn't afford to defy the Bates family. Although Samira's father and Godfrey were old friends, and the marriage proposal was presented humbly, rejecting it could mean the end of their long-standing friendship.
Moreover, and perhaps more critically, Samira was not held in high esteem at home.
The Shaw family favored sons over daughters, a bias Samira had long accepted. She had given up any claims to the family business, content instead to pursue her passion for medicine.
Yet, she hadn't anticipated that her family would still find a way to use her.
"I won't marry you," Jonathan said flatly, without even looking up at Samira.
"I know." Her voice tight as she struggled with her next words.
"Could you perhaps talk to your father about dropping this marriage idea? My family doesn't really have a say in this."
Before Jonathan and Bethany had returned home, Samira had contemplated a private discussion with him but had held back, hoping the Bates family might reconsider their stance.
However, just before she was due to change Jonathan's dressing, her father had called once more.
He had instructed her to secure Jonathan's agreement to the marriage by any means necessary. With the Bates family's support, the Shaw family could ascend to greater heights. He had even admonished her not to botch this opportunity, reminding her of the family's investment in her upbringing and declaring it was time she repaid that debt.
Samira found herself needing to speak with Jonathan alone, so she waited until Bethany was out of earshot.
Noticing Jonathan's silence, she understood his reluctance to engage with her.
In a burst of frustration, Samira said, "I saved your life once. Now I need your help with something. Can you do that?"
Finally, Jonathan looked up at her, his face still devoid of emotion.
"I've already told you; I won't marry you."
The impossibility of marriage meant Samira didn't have to fret over bis, "Can you ask your father to speak with mine?"
